Search used to be an act of curiosity.

You typed something into Google and stepped into a maze. Links led to other links. Articles contradicted each other. Forums added noise. Somewhere in that chaos, you built your own understanding.

It was inefficient.
But it was alive.

Now, we are moving toward systems that don’t just help you search — they think for you.

No wandering.
No friction.
No getting lost.

Just answers.

In 2025, the AI industry shifted from chatbots that answer questions to agentic systems that execute tasks autonomously. The promise is seductive: why spend hours researching when a machine can synthesize everything in seconds? Why struggle through contradictory sources when an AI can deliver a single, coherent response?

But something subtle is shifting beneath the convenience.

Curiosity is no longer a process — it’s becoming a transaction.

You ask.
You receive.
You move on.

No tension.
No uncertainty.
No transformation.


The Value of Not Knowing

Curiosity was never just about answers.

It was about:

  • Sitting with confusion
  • Following threads that led nowhere
  • Being wrong — repeatedly
  • Discovering something you didn’t know you were looking for

The answer was never the point.

The search changed you.

Cognitive science has a name for what we’re doing now: cognitive offloading — the act of delegating mental tasks to external tools to reduce cognitive load. It’s not inherently bad. Humans have always offloaded: writing extends memory, calculators extend computation, maps extend spatial reasoning.

But AI extends offloading into new territory. We’re not just outsourcing memory or calculation anymore. We’re outsourcing thinking itself.

Research from the University of Sydney suggests that heavy reliance on AI tools correlates with increased mental laziness, anxiety, and lower critical engagement. When you offload knowledge acquisition itself — not just storage, but the actual process of understanding — you impact the very mechanism that allows you to interact with new information critically.

What happens when it’s a system that has read everything, can reproduce any voice, and delivers answers faster than you can formulate doubts?

The anxiety isn’t about influence anymore. It’s about irrelevance. If the machine can think better than you, faster than you, more comprehensively than you — what remains for you to do?

What Happens Next?

  • Your ability to think without assistance
